The history of St. John’s begins in the summer of 1859 with the establishment of a Sunday school in the village of Youngstown by Henrietta Thornton, sister of composer Stephen Foster. The growing parish consecrated a wood-frame, New England Style church in 1862 just a few blocks from the present location.
